Neogen's DNA Identification test determines the code at specific sites within a dog's DNA that identify it individually. This test can be thought of as a DNA "fingerprint" for your dog.
Why order DNA profiling & parentage?
Profiles of offspring and parents can be compared to confirm parentage between the sire and dam individually, or for the entire group, or "trio" of sire, dam and offspring. Based on the number of shared alleles, or inherited versions of DNA, a sire and/or dam can either be "qualified" or "excluded" as a parent. These results can provide proof of pedigree relationships and testing is required for registration in certain cases.
Neogen's canine DNA profile test will analyze 15 different STR markers and report results as a letter code, which is assigned based on the length of the repeated code. Details regarding STR-based testing and SNP-based testing can be found below.
STR-based Parentage Testing
Traditionally, DNA identification in dogs has been conducted in the same way that the FBI collects and stores genetic information about criminals. The test is performed by determining the length of STR's, or short tandem repeats in the genetic code. STR's are stretches of DNA in which the letters of the genetic code repeat in a predictable way. Based on the determined length of the STR, a letter code is assigned.
SNP-based Parentage Testing
An alternative type of DNA identification and parentage can be conducted by determining SNP's, or single nucleotide polymorphisms. A SNP is a single nucleotide found within the DNA in an area that is highly variable between individuals. Typically, 100-200 markers will be determined in this test to enable the results to be used for parentage. Reliable markers for this type of identification have been determined and are likely to be the future of companion animal identification and parentage.
How to Order:
There are various sets of markers that are recognized for dogs internationally and the markers used may vary for different kennel clubs and organizations. ** If you are planning to register your dog through an organization such as a kennel club or registry, please contact the registry directly before ordering a dog dna a test. **
If you will not be registering your pup, you can order parentage services directly from Neogen using this submission form.
