The Veterinary Diagnostics Section (VDX) at Neogen® is a specialized section dedicated primarily to disease diagnostics. The tests offered include major diseases of swine and cattle. Through real-time Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, the laboratory offers a same-day turnaround time for major swine diseases including Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV), Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) and Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) by real-time PCR.
Samples received by 1:00 pm CST for PEDV and PDCoV testing, or by 2:00 pm CST for PRRSV, will have results reported that day. Further PCR testing for Swine Influenza Virus, (SIV), Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo.) carry a next-day turnaround time. In addition, the lab offers ELISA testing to detect the presence of antibodies against PRRSV and M. hyo.
For sheep producers, Neogen offers testing solutions for Ovine Progressive Pneumonia (OPP). Exposure of sheep flocks to the OPP virus can be detected by the OPP/CAEV antibody test, which works for OPP antibody detection in sheep and for Caprine Arthritis and Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) in goats. The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, in collaboration with Neogen, developed a genetic test determining the susceptibility of sheep to OPP. This genomic test is part of an ongoing nationwide effort to eradicate OPP through selection of more resistant animals for breeding, and is offered exclusively through Neogen.
In the cattle industry, Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) continues to be a significant cause for production losses, both in feedlots and dairies. The VDX laboratory offers rapid BVDV testing to detect persistently infected (PI) animals. Sample types like tissues collected in Allflex Tissue Sampling Units (TSU), whole blood, hair follicles, and fresh ear notches are not only suitable for BVDV testing, but can also be used for further genomic testing if desired. Depending on the sample type submitted, the laboratory will conduct either the real-time PCR BVDV test or the BVDV antigen ELISA test. Both tests have excellent sensitivity and specificity and will allow producers to confidently select healthy animals to enter their feedlot or dairy operations.
Another test offered on the ELISA platform is early stage pregnancy detection in cattle, goat, sheep, and bison. If desired, the pregnancy testing can be easily combined with genomic testing, i.e. in the Igenity Heifer Replacement Program. Results are generally emailed and report formats can be tailored specifically to clients’ needs. Once an account is created with a personal login and password, clients can also get access to the Neogen Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to view test results at their convenience.
The VDX laboratory is firmly committed to the highest level of quality in all its testing. The laboratory director providing oversight of testing holds a DVM degree, which enables efficient communication and consultation with veterinary and non-veterinary clients.
Neogen Genomics' laboratory is third-party accredited to the international quality standard ISO17025 through the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation. In addition, several of the routine tests provided (PRRSV, BVDV, M. hyo.) are under the scope of te same accreditation (certificate number 2712.01).
